Coriander
(Coriandrum sativum), also commonly called cilantro, is an
annual herb in the family Apiaceae.Coriander has been used as a
folk medicine for the relief of anxiety and insomnia in Iranian
folk medicine. Experiments in mice support its use as
an
anxiolytic.[7]
Coriander seeds are also used in traditional Indian medicine as
a diuretic by boiling equal amounts of coriander seeds and cumin
seeds, then cooling and consuming the resulting liquid.[8] In
holistic and some traditional medicine, it is used as a
carminative and for general digestive aid.
Chukku-Malli Kaapi: Habit of drinking tea was
adapted from the British by modern Indians. The ancient habit
was to drink a herbal preparation with coriander seeds , dried
ginger (sukku is lime-treated ginger which has superior
medicinal value than just dried ginger) and sweetened with
palm sugar. This herbal tea is excellent for health especially
to keep the kidneys to work efficiently and also for digestion.
Please use organically grown coriander and ginger for the best
results.
Very Interestingly the bed coffee given to the lord of
Sriranganathar temple in Trichy is this sukku-malli kaapi
prepared in Dhanwanthri shrine. Every morning this is then given
as prasad to the devotees. This ritual was initiated by the
ancient masters who knew the medicinal benefit of this herbal
Tea.
Chuku Malli drink (Coriander +
Dry ginger)
Coriander Seeds - 100 gms
Sukku(dry ginger powder) - 25 gms
Slightly roast coriander seeds and add dry ginger fry for 2 mins
in medium flame
Let it cool and powder them.
Prepare the decoction with 1 cup of water and 1 teaspoon of
powdered jaggery or brown unrefined sugar and 1 tps of
prepared powder. Boil for minutes.
Ginger
is one the best known anti-inflammatory drug known to man and
coriander is soothing to the kidneys. The combination is a great
medicine to kidney failure patients.
